Drama Club offers year-round weekly theater classes to young people ages 10 to 21 in pre-trail and post-conviction lockup facilities in NYC. New York is one of only two states that automatically prosecutes all young people as adults when they turn 16 years of age. As a result, Drama Club programming spans both the juvenile and criminal justice systems and offers classes in six New York locations:

New York recently passed a law called “Close to Home”, which requires all New York City youth adjudicated as delinquents to stay at home or in local facilities in New York. We have been asked to expand our services to these Close to Home facilities.

In spring 2015 we piloted a program for youth in “Close to Home” facilities at Brooklyn Pride, a school in East New York, Brooklyn. Drama Club collaborated with the NYC Department of Education and all of the participants received school credit for their active participation.

Looking forward, we would also like to do this work in juvenile facilities in upstate New York.
