What does Raise The Age mean for Drama Club?
First, the adolescent boys from Rikers Island will be moving into Horizon Juvenile Center in the Bronx, where Drama Club has been providing consistent year-round programing since early 2014. We are working to increase our class offerings at Horizon to help accommodate the influx of kids. We have been serving the youth on Rikers and feel we could provide some consistency in the midst of this major transition.
Additionally, the adolescent girls on Rikers will be moved to Crossroads Juvenile Center in Brooklyn, (where Drama Club was founded in 2013). We already have requested to add an additional weekly class for female identifying individuals therefore providing the adolescent girls a safe space to be open and to be able to bond with our female teaching staff.
Drama Club will continue to serve the 18-21 year old population on Rikers Island. Science has determined that during this age, the human brain is still in development and desperately needs the opportunity for self-expression and processing-by-storytelling that Drama Club provides. We enjoy working with this population and have made a commitment to stick by them.
With this new legislation, our number of overall classes will be increasing, and presents an exciting opportunity for you to contribute to the lives of these brilliant young people. We ask that you consider making a donation today, as we expand our classes, and continue to be a resource for incarcerated youth, during this transition.
Drama Club gladly accepts donations by check or wire transfer. Checks can be mailed to: Drama Club, 34-18 Northern Boulevard, Long Island City, NY 11101
